No More Parties for This Party
Today in Johannesburg, AIDS-Free World released Electing to Rape: Sexual Terror in Mugabe's Zimbabwe, our report on politically-motivated rape in Zimbabwe. Some journalists were unable to attend our press conference because they are actually in Zimbabwe, covering a congress that will probably endorse the 85-year-old Robert Mugabe as President for the next five years.
His party, ZANU-PF, is still in power, as part of a so-called unity government with the Movement for Democratic Change. The National People’s Congress brings together ZANU-PF delegates to talk about the future of their party and its leader.
In many parts of the world, if you’re responsible for widespread massacres, rapes, election fraud, fiscal fecklessness, and helping spread HIV in your country, you might lose your job. But not in Zimbabwe.
There’s still time to take Mugabe’s ill-gotten power from him. There’s still time to show the world that a murderous megalomaniac should not go down in history as someone who succeeded in squashing all opposition and triumphantly ending his life in office.
Robert Mugabe doesn’t deserve an 86th birthday party paid for by the people of Zimbabwe.
